Watch Night Services

On December 31, 1862 blacks joined together at Watch Night Services in churches and homes to await the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation. Also known as Freedom’s Eve, they praised God for bringing them through. For on January 1, 1863 all slaves in the Confederate states would be declared legally free. It’s known as a time for prayer, worship and reflection and is still celebrated by many today.

That initial Watch Night Service was the beginning of a new way of life. One that allows me to attend church (and do life) with all nationalities recognizing God does not see black or white or Asian.  He sees his children and loves us equally. Slavery is a part of my history just as growing up, New Year’s Eve was always about the Watch Night Services… but they are both a part of my past. They do not have to define or dictate my present and future.

My home church is not predominantly black. We will not host a Watch Night Service today. However, I can’t imagine a more caring, loving and social conscious group of people to serve with and worship God. And, I won’t attend a Watch Night Service today hosted by a different church. Not because I am denying or ignoring my past but simply because I don’t need to repeat it to remember it. I worshipped yesterday at church among people of all nationalities and backgrounds. It was a firm reminder of what happened on January 1, 1863. For without that morning- today would not have been possible. I am thankful my ancestors made it through. I am thankful The Wesleyan Church has always stood against slavery and for equality. I am thankful to belong to a local church family that loves me despite differences in background and culture. I am thankful for that initial Freedom’s Eve because it is a testament that my ancestors knew they were free in God before they were freed by law.

I will watch the New Year come in with long time friends in the comfort of home. And I will rejoice, praise and worship God for bringing all my brothers and sisters in Christ (both living and long gone) through whatever struggles they’ve had to endure. I will watch tonight for all of humanity not just my ancestors.
